DHARWAD: Vincent Christin, 76, who was allegedly abandoned by his son on the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway on the outskirts of Dharwad, died at the orphanage in the District Civil Hospital here on Saturday night. He suffered a cardiac attack, doctors said.
He was admitted to the orphanage on Thursday by district rural police, after locals spotted the old man moving around aimlessly.
District civil surgeon Dr Giridhar Kuknoor said the old man was suffering from Alzheimer’s and was not coherent in his statements. However, he was otherwise fit.
Even as police and hospital authorities were trying to trace Vincent’s relatives, some members of local Christian organisations came to meet him at the orphanage after reading a TOI report on his son dropping him by the highway. They wanted to help Vincent and were talking to him on Saturday night, when he suddenly developed chest pain and suffered a massive heart attack, Dr Kuknoor said. “Since there is nobody to claim his body, it has been kept in the hospital morgue. We have informed local police but they have not been able to trace the family.”
On Thursday, locals near Garag Cross had seen a young man dropping him from his car, and speeding away. They found out that his son had left him on the highway. They informed the police, who sent the old man to the District Civil Hospital. Vincent had identified himself and said he was a mechanic and a resident of Mathikere.
